Wheeler pushchairs are a relatively recent addition to the pushchair market and as with other types of chassis comes in a varying range in both size and shape.
The first thing to know is that all 3 wheelers are designed for off road use, but are merely a lifestyle type choice(as many cars made to look like off roaders but are not suited to anything rougher than the supermarket car park). True off roaders have a larger wheel base and feature 3 (or sometimes 4) large wheels- normally 12” in diameter running on sealed bearings to make them easier to push.
Just because these true off roaders are designed for a more rugged use many models are still easy to use round town. With features like lightweight Aluminium chassis (approx 8kg including the wheels) and in some cases a swivel front wheel. Mountain Buggy, Jane and Out ‘n’ About make some of the better known off road models, whilst for a lifestyle choice that look the part models from Quinny are a popular choice.
So you’ve chosen a 3 wheeler pushchair, it doesn’t mean that baby has to make any sacrifices to accommodate your lifestyle. Many models can be converted to more traditional forms of transport with the addition of a carrycot or car seat option, usually fitting on to the chassis with a simple bracket or clip. Remember it’s not advisable to go fully off road with a newborn baby until it has developed its neck muscles and is a little stronger. You don’t want to shake your new arrival too vigorously. The choice doesn’t stop there as twin models are available to accommodate either twins or a baby and toddler (triple pushchairs are also available!) so the arrival of that second (or third) bundle of trouble needn’t slow you down too much.
